Reliability enabled by RCM, CBM, and a new maintenance management system yielded massive improvement in fleet performance and capacity.

Reliability enabled by RCM, CBM, and a new maintenance management system yielded massive improvement in fleet performance and capacity.

Reliability

The Director of Fleet Performance knew there was an opportunity to improve the performance of his 160 vessel fleet through Reliability. His talented 4-person team explored the market for technical solutions. But manifesting his vision remained elusive.

Datamasters recognized his challenge. We introduced rigour and discipline with FORTIG and applied its Methodology. Working with his team we defined a new way to manage their assets and identified the skills his tradespeople would need for CBM, RCM and a replacement CMMS / EAM.

The business case was simple and powerful. A 1% increase in Reliability across their 160 vessel fleet yielded a 4-ship capacity, saving between $320M and $480M CapEx and increasing revenue potential.

International Ports

Vancouver’s international port that borders 8 municipalities is Canada’s significant transportation gateway to the Pacific.

Systems & Data

Real Estate is one of Vancouver Port Corporation’s core businesses. Their people struggled to keep up with capturing real property information and negotiating leases on occupied property using the Port’s archaic systems. It was difficult to keep up with the calculations for taxes due on unoccupied waterfront property bordering each of 8 neighbouring municipalities. The Port’s relationship with these municipalities was tense.

With new management in place, the Port was ready to replace their archaic systems.

Datamasters addressed this challenge by a performing an initial investigation and business analysis. We designed a business solution to streamline Real Estate’s business processes that manage the Port’s occupied property and related leases, and invoice their tenants while integrating with the Port’s internal business systems. A critical part of the solution was the Port’s adoption of a new property reference system based upon an internationally recognized standard recommended by Datamasters.

Following the development effort, Datamasters managed the significant implementation to define the Port’s property including reconciling and electronically recording the survey maps of occupied property. This included digitization of the inventory of leases. A byproduct of this initiative was an electronic map of the Port's property that became a valuable corporate resource and a foundation for future business geographics.

This initiative was worthy of note because of the level of collaboration and agreement among all 11 organizations at 3 levels of government. All organizations engaged in a streamlined business-to-business process involving the electronic exchange and update of the Port's property information. Visibility, data integrity, and precision were fundamental to the accurate calculation of its grants owing to the municipalities in lieu of taxes.

This integrated business-to-business solution benefited all organizations and contributed directly to the Port's objective of improving relations with its business partners.

Strategic Solutions

The East Asiatic Shipping (OK) firm had been in business for 125 years. A visionary manager who was a former first mate off an OK ship formed a team of talented developers in OK Data to do things differently using technology. Datamasters became a strategic member of this team.

Port of Load and Port of Discharge are fundamental to the shipping industry. Datamasters wrote the manifest program that was transmitted electronically to the Port of Discharge before the ship arrived to unload. Datamasters specified a Freight Statistical System for one of OK’s strategic partners to leverage its manifest history. Datamasters designed, wrote and delivered a Freight Targeting System that executed on board ship, accounting for the goods loaded then unloaded in real time.

Legacy Systems

Ship-to-shore is a complex business. Timing is everything to keep ships moving and productive. Reliability is essential.

Datamasters assisted several terminal handlers upgrade their maintenance management systems. While doing so, we looked for opportunities to uncover hidden capacity, reduce costs, and improve performance.

A terminal handler was redesigning half their site.

We advised them to renegotiate the contract with their engineering firm to commission the asset’s information at the same time they commissioned the new assets. This approach saved the terminal $Millions in time providing accurate data while avoiding the cost of duplicated effort.

At a large profitable terminal handler, Datamasters uncovered hidden capacity by simplifying complex handoffs and streamlining the way they managed their assets with a focus on reliability.

The terminal handler deferred a $35M expansion project due to this new capacity.
